What Is the City Council?
En Independence, el consejo tiene siete miembros; los cuales son el alcalde y seis concejales. Nuestra forma de gobierno se llama “weak mayor” (alcalde débil) porque el alcalde no tiene mucho más poder que un concejal. Aunque el consejo toma las últimas decisiones de la ciudad, las operaciones cotidianas son dirigidas por el administrador municipal, elegido por el consejo. Ahora nuestro administrador municipal es Zach Walker, y nuestro alcalde es Rory Rowland.
De los seis concejales, dos son “At-Large” (en general) así que toda la gente en la ciudad puede votar por ellos. Ahora nuestros dos concejales en general son Jared Fears y Bridget McCandless. Ellos dos y el alcalde tienen elecciones cada cuatro años, su elección siguiente será el 2026.

In Independence, the city council has seven members; the mayor and six city councilpersons. Our form of government is called a “weak mayor” government because the mayor doesn’t have much more power than a councilperson. Although the city council is the ultimate decision maker of the city, the day-to-day decisions are made by the city manager, who is selected by the city council. Our current city manager is Zach Walker, and our current mayor is Rory Rowland.
Of the six city councilpeople, two are “At-Large”, meaning that everybody in the city can vote for them. Our current at-large councilpersons are Jared Fears and Bridget McCandless. They, and the mayor, have elections every four years, with the next election being held in 2026.
The other four councilpersons only represent part of the city. Independence has four districts, one councilperson for each district. These councilpersons also have elections every four years, but their next elections are in 2024.
Yo soy un candidato para ser concejal en el Distrito 1 (es el azul en el mapa de arriba). El Distrito 1 está en el norte de la calle 23, y la mayoría al oeste de la calle Noland aunque también abarca un poco del este en la parte norte. I am a candidate for city council in District 1 (it is in blue in the map above). District 1 is North of 23rd Street, and mostly to the West of Noland Road, although in the North parts of District 1 are to the East. District 1 includes The Square, Englewood, Fairmount, and Mt. Washington. Only citizens who live in District 1 can vote for me. The current city councilperson in District 1 is John Perkins.
