Crime is a serious problem that requires a multi-faceted response. From a strong police force that can quickly and effectively respond to crime, to social programs that aim to reduce the underlying causes of crime like poverty, drug addiction, and mental health, the city has to take a strong approach to improving public safety.
But all of those things cost money, and due to decades of fiscal irresponsibility the city budget is not in a position to have the flexibility to increase our crime fighting capabilities. In fact, our financial situation is on the verge of disaster.
Some candidates will look at this problem and say they will just cut elsewhere. But the general fund is the police fund, and the police fund is the general fund. 45% of the general fund is used to fund the police department, and a combined 77% is used for police and fire. On the reverse side, the general fund makes up 78% of the police funding.
El crimen es un problema muy serio que necesita una respuesta multifacética. Desde un equipo fuertes de policías que puede rápida y efectivamente responder al delito, a programas sociales que reduzcan las causas subyacentes de crimen como la pobreza, drogadicción y problemas mentales; la ciudad necesita hacer un enfoque fuerte para mejorar la seguridad de nuestra ciudad.

That was a lot of numbers, but let me say this as simply and clearly as possible.
The collapse of the general fund means a collapse in police funding.
It does not matter how much a politician says they want to increase police funding. No amount of talk changes the financial realities our city is facing.
This is a crisis whose due date isn’t measured in decades, but in months. This is a crisis whose solution will not be easy.
Our city leaders have sat around hoping for a solution to appear out of thin air for too long. We need new, strong leadership that will take on this problem head on to find a financially stable future for Independence.
